Dreaded Winter Hits Home

April 30, 2008

Hi all,

I have done no exercise so far this week!  I have been battling a virus which has blocked my exercise routine.  So that I don’t go totally backwards exercise wise I have been going for 20-30min walks to clear the airways!

Hope all your exercises are going well this week J

Where do you sit in your life?

The statistics on TV at present say that 49% of all Australians are overweight. Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease related deaths are both on the increase. Poor lifestyle and diet choices and the lack of exercise are listed as the major contributing factors – Do you fall into this category? Are you one of those Aussies that say oi oi oi’ll have some extra salt on those chips… along with the higher risk of chronic renal failure and heart attack thanks mate!… Scary thought huh?

Why is it that your health and wellbeing is always the first thing to drop off your to-do-list?? Is it because you are time poor and have too much else on your plate (no pun intended). That you have other ‘important work’ to do? You have family commitments i.e. your children, husbands and wives need you? And how about trying to find the time to socialise and catch up with friends!! I have no time for exercise, I hear you say… Well people, here’s what I think – Excuses! Excuses! Excuses!! And let me add, bad ones at that!

Here’s a thought – if you actually invest some time in your health and wellbeing, your energy levels will increase and a much greater life expectancy achieved to share with your family, friends and time to spend on hobbies.

If you don’t make your health and wellbeing a major priority in your life today, that terrifying statistic will continue to increase (along with your waistline!).

As a coach, I am often advising people to make the commitment to yourself – you are your greatest investment. Determine your health and wellbeing goals and then set about achieving them – write them down – you will increase your chances ten fold in achieving them! Make simple changes first i.e. instead of wasting time thinking about exercise and feeling guilty about not doing it – JDI – Just Do It! 30mins a day is an excellent start – this can be easily attained by getting on/off the bus two stops earlier. In your lunch break pop on your trainers and pound the pavement. Positive reinforcement can be obtained by joining a walking group, joining your local gym and for some much needed motivation and inspiration; there is an array of books available on health and wellbeing topics.

There are 168hrs in every week. The average adult requires between 6-8 hours sleep (42-56 hours total) leaving 126-112 hours for work, spending time with your family, friends and loved ones and the all important health and wellbeing. The first step is to determine what it is you actually do with all your time. You must learn to prioritise your life – your health and wellbeing is one of the must do, should do and can do items – it’s all about your attitude and commitment. To find some ‘extra’ time in your schedule, just wake up an hour early each day – might be a tad difficult at first, practice it for 12 weeks and before you know it, a habit, a healthy one has formed and you will never know how you did without it – Make the most of everyday!

Remember your day doesn’t start when you get to work, your day starts when and how you choose to make it. Start everyday by asking yourself “what do I want to achieve today?” and start it with reason. I personally train each morning at 5.30am, – I always say what you achieve is only limited to what you decide to do. I do accept some people aren’t morning people – on your way home after work head to the gym. Participate in one of the many different types of classes available - join the people who are all taking the initiative to invest in their health and wellbeing – it’s also a great way to expel any stresses from the day! Whatever you do, don’t go home first, you’ll be less likely to hop back in the car and go back to the gym.

We have one body and one chance to look after it. It’s never too early and never too late to make the choice to improve your life today. Prioritise your life to look after you first, if you are looked after, then your family, your friends, career and what ever else you like will have the very best of you!
